Biography

Asif Khan is a British architect and multi-disciplinary artist born in London in 1979.

Working fluidly between buildings, landscapes, installations, and objects, his interests are in profound sensory experience, cultural exchange and the merging of history with the future. He considers each project as “bridges leading to a new world, and a new self.” Based in London, Khan’s studio undertakes projects with a global reach, engaging a wide geographic and cultural range.

Khan’s works investigate universal ideas of beauty, and explores new aesthetic languages through what he calls the “reconnection of art and science”. He often engages sites with layered histories, addressing themes of post-colonialism, community empowerment, and identity.

Khan’s works have been exhibited at prominent venues including the Serpentine Gallery, V&A Dundee, MAAT Lisbon, Vitra Design Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, Milan Salone, Milan Triennale, Federation Square Melbourne, London Design Week, Design Miami, Tokyo Design Week and Sharjah Architecture Triennale, and multiple Olympic Games and World Expos.

His current projects include the Barbican Art Centre Renewal, the New London Museum (opening 2026), the Museum of the Incense Road in Al-Ula, Tselinny Centre for Contemporary Culture in Almaty (opening 2025), Cartier at the V&A (opening 2025).

He has taught at numerous places including the Royal College of Art in London, Musashino Art University, Tokyo, at Harvard and Zayed University.

Khan was awarded an MBE for “Services to Architecture” in 2017, Architect of the Year 2018 by the German Design Council, and received the Grand Prix for Innovation from Cannes Lions in 2014. He received the FX award for outstanding contribution to Architecture in 2024. His carbon fibre gates for Expo 2020 Dubai were nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He was an Olympic Torchbearer for London 2012.  Khan currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Design Museum in London.
